Socrates (c. 470–399 BCE) was a Greek philosopher whose influence on Western thought is profound. Often considered the father of Western philosophy, Socrates's teachings were primarily transmitted through the writings of his students, Plato, and Xenophon. Despite the lack of direct written works by Socrates himself, his Socratic method of inquiry and his emphasis on ethics and knowledge have had a lasting impact on philosophy, education, and Western culture.

The Socratic Method
One of Socrates's most significant contributions to philosophy was his Socratic method of inquiry. This method involved a series of questions and answers designed to stimulate critical thinking and expose inconsistencies in thought. By engaging in dialogue with his students, Socrates would guide them towards a deeper understanding of concepts and their own beliefs. This method is still widely used in education and philosophy today.
