How fast do commercial airplanes fly? Commercial airliners, such as those operated by major airlines, often fly at speeds ranging from 500 to 600 mph (800 to 960 km/h). These speeds, obtained at cruising altitudes of roughly 35,000 feet, enable airplanes to travel large distances in short periods. Airplane manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus design their aircraft to maintain these speeds for both fuel efficiency and passenger comfort. However, weather patterns, air traffic control, and specific flight paths can all have an impact on the plane's actual speed at different points throughout the journey. While takeoff and landing need slower speeds, once in the air, these aircraft cruise at very high speeds, assuring speedy and efficient transportation.
